About this artwork.

In this sculpture, Wladimir de Vries combines his love for making female and animal figures. From the young face you can see a girl playfully jumping backwards on a horse. But considering the breasts, legs and buttocks, a young woman seems to be taking great pleasure in lying on a horse. The female figure in this sculpture adopts a playful and erotic way. The statue, carved out of limestone, has organic shapes; woman and horse seem almost to merge.
 
There are various works of art by Wladimir de Vries in the city, The most famous are Agriculture and Livestock (Landbouw en Veeteelt, also known as Blote Bet which loosely translates as Bare Bet) on de Herebrug, The Foals (Het Veulen) on Radesingel and The Bison (De Wisent) in the Noorderplantsoen. His works – all figurative in nature – were created in the period from around 1950 to 1980. This was precisely the time when a predominant preference for abstract art began to emerge. But Wladimir de Vries continued to work in his original – traditional – style. De Vries' wilfulness also characterises his sculptures from which pride and well-being are expressed.

De Vries created Amazone in the years 1980-1981 within the framework of the BKR (Visual Arts Regulation) for the municipality of Groningen. The statue has been in Ruischerbrug on the Woldweg since 1997. Where it was placed in the interim is not known.
