Aden

Herman Lamers

About this artwork.

At the entrance to the Proton Therapy Centre on the grounds of the UMCG, which opened in 2018, stands Aden – a gigantic, 3D print of a 'boy', comprised of 450 stacked glass panels. When Aden is lit up by the sun, its turquoise colour is expressed in all its strength.

Scans, light, radiation and layered images – the elements that make up the giant child – also play a crucial role in the irradiation techniques used to treat young cancer patients in particular in the Proton Therapy Center. The "giant" symbolises both the scientist who moves mountains in technical and medical development and the power contained in a human being. Artist Herman Lamers made the sculpture partly in the hope that people dealing with illness will feel strengthened by the giant child.
