Abri 2
George van Engelen
About this artwork.
Where Abri 2 is located is also where a previous art installation could be found, confusingly also called Abri 2. The first version was a genuine bus shelter that had been transformed into a monument to art by Hester Oerlemans and Bert Kramer. The characteristic little building, which used to be a regular feature of the Groningen countryside, had been preserved by them in such a way that it could have stood for years.
But, after the bus line through the village of Ten Post was re-routed, an unfortunate misunderstanding led to its removal by the municipality of Ten Boer. In order to rectify this error, the municipality commissioned artist George van Engelen to create an installation to mark the site of the vanished bus shelter. Van Engelen designed a small structure in Corten steel, engraved with the letters Abri 2.
The QR code on Abri 2 used to guide to a website with an art route for cyclists, but is momentarily dysfunctional.
