Abri 1
Jan Konings
About this artwork.
Abri 1 can be found on Damsterdiep, at the point where the towpath along the water ends at the Rijksweg. Both the title and the work itself refer to bus shelters. Abris are small, unlocked waiting rooms available for use, predominantly at public transport stops.
Abri 1 did start out life as a bus shelter, but after the bus route through the village of Ten Post was re-routed, the transparent shelter started its second life as a viewpoint and meeting place. Sitting in the shelter of the Abri affords the observer an open view across the village and its surroundings.
Jan Konings of the Rotterdam-based design agency Schie 2.0 designed the Abri in 2002 as part of the redevelopment of the Ten Post village centre.
