Abacus
Wia van Dijk
About this artwork.
The low fence that separates the former primary school De Rieshoek from the main road has been transformed into an artistic and cheerful abacus. This immediately explains the title; Abacus is the Latin word for abacus. There are colorful benches both inside and outside the fence and the owl on one of those benches is a nod to the wisdom of the motorist.
Wia van Dijk (Assen, 1954) was educated at Academy Minerva. In 1985 she received the Stimulation Prize from the Amsterdam Council of the Arts. In her three-dimensional works in particular, she looks for forms in the border area between figurative and abstract art; color variations play a major role in this. There are three other works of art by Wia van Dijk in the Municipality of Groningen.
