Alexander Blu is a young painter with an international background; he has lived and worked in Belgium, Greece, Austria, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Alexander’s greatest interest is in painting people and their stories. He is a ‘real’ storyteller and specializes in the use of light and color. He mainly works with oil paint on canvas.

His paintings are often figurative and largely inspired by archetypes from the past. He deals directly with problems and questions of our time, questions that we only deal with indirectly and indirectly. Blu does not make it easy for the viewer: the viewer often sees work that asks complicated questions from a comfortable position. Blu invites the viewer to look at these questions from an uncomfortable position.

As the storm of progress rages above us and the march of modern life overtakes us every day, Blu digs deeper into the past. “Art is what we do, and doing that renews and redefines itself.”

The display window of the former Vapiano building on Nieuwe Markt has been temporarily designated as a pop-up art rental service in 2024. Every three weeks, a piece by a Groningen artist will be featured in the center window. This artwork is also available for purchase or rent through Kunstpunt’s art rental service.

Additionally, the window alternately shows work from the regular Art Rental Collection and the Studio Collection – art that comes directly from the studios of northern artists.
