Now on view: the solo exhibition of Marianne Brouwer

The latest work by artist Marianne Brouwer is now on view in the Kunstuitleen of Kunstpunt Groningen. In the solo exhibition Dichtbij ('Close') she shows her colorful paintings in which she explores the boundary between abstract and figurative. Central to her most recent work are places where people and nature come together, such as a backyard or her own studio at the swimming pool De Papiermolen. No grandiose scenes, but the beauty of the everyday. In addition to her own work, Brouwer will also give a stage to her favorite works from the Kunstuitleen, and she will give a workshop that ties in with the Art on the Street Month.

Brouwer concluded her time at Academy Minerva in September 2016 with a favorable review in NRC Handelsblad: “You just have to dare to paint like a Monet 150 years and all those big names how the light falls on the world”, wrote the newspaper about her graduation work. Her rendering of the greenery on the Gedempte Zuiderdiep was also praised: “Rarely seen trees waving so beautifully in a painting”. It is typical of the work of Brouwer, who, like the French painter Claude Monet (1840-1926), gives an impression of reality. Try and adjust

Try and adjust

Brouwer often starts with a quick sketch on the canvas, which she draws with markers. Then she starts painting according to the principle of trying and adjusting: gradually she notices how she wants to use the paint, which colors fit well and how the composition should be. In this way, while painting, without a preconceived plan, the new work is created. Her paintings are colorful and the pleasure of painting is just exuberant.

Marianne Brouwer's choice

In addition to her own work, Brouwer also shows her favorite works from the Kunstuitleen collection at the exhibition. Very diverse art – from paintings to photography – but there is also a common denominator, according to Brouwer: all works have something mysterious or elusive. She chose work by Marten Klompien, Hilmar Schäfer and Alida Everts, among others.
