Unveiling of Mural at UMCG

By: Redactie, 9 October 2024

This week marked the unveiling of the mural by Gijs Frieling & Job Wouters (FreelingWaters) in the new building of the University Center for Psychiatry (UCP) at the UMCG. The artwork, titled The Artist’s Garden, was created under the guidance of Kunstpunt.

Design

The design features numerous natural elements, but it also includes references to the art therapy sessions that patients at the UCP take part in. For example, there are drawings and repainted stoneworks. Gijs Frieling said: "I hope the work is accessible, but that it also continues to evoke new experiences, as there are always deeper artistic layers to explore."

In a special video, we take you behind the scenes of the creation process of The Artist’s Garden:

The Artist’s Garden was completed in August 2024 by FreelingWaters in the cloisters of the new University Center for Psychiatry (UCP), commissioned by the Art Affairs department of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), under the auspices of the Thomassen à Thuessink UMCG Art Society, and supervised by Kunstpunt Groningen.
