Scholten monument in Stadspark complete again

By: Redactie, 20 October 2022

Today the two statues of the Scholten Monument in the City Park have been replaced. It concerns two children's figures carved from limestone in sports outfits: a boy with a discus and a girl with clubs. The reproduction of Abraham Hesselink's sculptures is based on the remains of the original. Sculptor Serge van Druten first worked on it, then Koen van Velzen completed it.

The monument was placed in the Stadspark in 1931 in memory of the potato flour manufacturer Jan Evert Scholten (1849-1918). He was also closely involved in the development of the City Park; a park intended as relaxation for the Groningen population.

The Scholten Monument was hit by a motorist in September 2020. After an investigation, the municipality of Groningen came to the conclusion not to completely restore the monument to the way it was before the collision, but to return the monument to its original state.

Groningen city management took care of the restoration of the monument in collaboration with Jurriëns Noord, Daad Architecten, Fonteintechniek Gruppen, Dick Norg forge garden technology, Marc de Groot - Flintstone, Donker Groen, Smid Glimmen, MTW, RCE, Broekema Wegenbouw and Kunstpunt.

The monument is now almost complete. Work is still underway to restore the monument's fountain. Read more about the Scholten Monument here.
