The Memory Balcony (Geheugenbalkon) on the Hereweg, unveiled in July, has been chosen by a jury of experts as the winner of the Groninger Architecture Prize 2021. Park Meerstad won the audience award.
Memory Balcony
The Memory Balcony was designed by architecture studio Studio L A and forms a vantage point during the renovation of the southern ring road, where the road disappears underground. A new park will be built on top of this: the Zuiderplantsoen. From a height of 10 meters, you look out on the city that is renewing and at the same time you find yourself on a piece of history: in the building, architects Lorien Beijaert and Arna Mačkić reused an existing section of the ring road, including a crash barrier.
The lookout point was developed on behalf of Kunstpunt Groningen, in close collaboration with Combinatie Herepoort.
Park Meerstad
The land art project by Jeroen Doorenweerd and Laos landscape architects received the most votes online. Art and nature come together in Park Meerstad. The park is the largest public land art project created in the Netherlands to date. Park Meerstad is also the first public park in the Netherlands designed in collaboration with a visual artist.
The Groningen Architecture Prize
The Groninger Architectuurprijs is the prize for good design in the municipality of Groningen. The Groningen Architecture Prize is an initiative of the Groningen Architecture Day Foundation (DAG), GRAS and Atelier Stadsbouwmeester. Every year, they draw up the balance of Groningen architecture on the basis of all submissions. With the prize they draw attention to the quality of the built environment and the importance of careful design.
Based on the entries, a professional and public jury will determine their winners: the best new building in Groningen. You can also vote online. The prizes are awarded to the winning teams of designers, clients and builders.
