CULTURE IN THE NIEMEYER FACTORY

By: Redactie, 16 April 2024

Kunstpunt, Noorderlicht, GRID Graphic Museum Groningen, NOORDWOORD, the resort, and the Poetry Palace present a plan for a new cultural hotspot in Groningen. The six cultural institutions have been working on a unique collaboration plan for some time and see the Niemeyer factory as a wonderful opportunity to realize more culture for even more audience groups.

In the central hall, visitors from the neighborhood see the final touches being put on an exhibition of top photographers from the Northern Netherlands. Meanwhile, a group of students heads to the educational space for a poetry workshop. In the Graphic Lab, students from Noorderpoort and Minerva are working with printing presses and new digital techniques, and in the library, visitors are flipping through beautifully designed books. At the Art Rental, someone is selecting new artwork while an employee hangs posters: Sunday afternoon, there will be another Cultural Café. A writer and a visual artist working in one of the in-house studios come to talk about their joint project.

If it's up to the six Groningen cultural institutions, this vision of the future will soon become a reality. Kunstpunt Groningen, Noorderlicht, GRID Graphic Museum Groningen, NOORDWOORD, the resort, and the Poetry Palace are convinced that they can offer more to the city and society by cleverly linking their programs. With that in mind, they took the initiative a few years ago to collaborate, share housing, and create a new cultural hotspot. The plans are now in an advanced stage. They see the Niemeyer factory as the designated location to realize their plans. The plans have been presented to the municipality of Groningen and the involved developer in recent weeks.

The six cultural institutions have a proven track record, and the new cultural hotspot will be much more than a place where they present their own programs. By sharing facilities such as a reception hall, a workshop, and an exhibition space, and by collaborating on content, a vibrant and versatile place emerges where there is always something to do. Thanks to strong ties, short lines, and intensive collaboration with educational institutions and the business community, a cultural hub is created where you experience, learn, and work. Whether you're a culture enthusiast, a resident of the neighborhood, a student, or a creator: this house of imagination is for everyone.

With a diverse program and jointly organized events, a large and diverse audience will be attracted: the partners expect more than 100,000 visitors annually. Housing in the Niemeyer factory will therefore bring life to the area and add value to a district that is in full development. It will be the place for new ideas, unexpected encounters, and exciting vistas. For those who live around the corner or just a bit further away.
