Noorderzon: Genius Loci
From August 17th to 27th 2023 in Noorderplantsoen
Step into a world where the soul of this place is shown. Genius Loci takes you on a journey of discovery through history. Inspired by Winti, a Surinamese religion, artist Faisel Saro shows you the layered complexity of the world in a unique way. On tightly stretched triangular canvases, he has created black and white drawings. They overlap each other. If you look closely, elements of the surroundings such as an old map of the location in Noorderplantsoen. Thus, present and past are interconnected.
In the video below, Faisel talks about his project and how he went about it:
About Faisel Saro
Faisel Saro (Willemstad, Curaçao, 1974) immigrated to the Netherlands at a young age. When he was 35, he decided to pursue his artistic calling and enrolled in art school. His body serves as Saro’s artistic compass, shaped by both a severe traffic accident and a chronic condition. These challenges have given him a profound connection to specific places, which form an important source of inspiration in his work. Genius Loci was created specifically for the Noorderzon festival. It is Saro’s first installation in a public space.

For KUNST. magazine we spoke to Faisel a few months ago about his preparations for the Noorderzon project. “For me it is the opportunity to work much bigger. Normally I make fairly small works in which I, as an artist, focus on visual strategies that have a suction effect on the viewer. Now I can blow things up and really exaggerate, which has a whole different appeal.” Click on this link for the entire interview.
