Reitdiep
Jan Hooft
About this artwork.
Reitdiep painted from the perspective of painter Jan Hooft, is one of the first Ploeg paintings that the municipality of Groningen purchased to support artists financially. The painting was purchased in 1932 for 125 guilders, from a collection of paintings sent by the art society De Ploeg. Jan Hooft painted a bend in the Reitdiep, with a red-roofed house on the right, reflected in the water.
Jan Hooft became a member of the Groningen art society in 1931 and in the same year opened an art dealership 'De Smidse' on Zwanestraat in Groningen. In addition to paintings, he also made metal sculptures, wire sculptures and applied art. Jan Hooft was good friends with George Martens, painter and co-founder of the art society, but left Groningen in 1937.
