Els Amman
About this artwork.
Els Amman (1931 - 1978) was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and became known for her colorful "rolling paintings" in the tradition of painter Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman. Amman studied at the Hague Royal Academy in 1950 but left for Groningen in the spring of 1961. Here she met Jos de Gruyter, the director of the Groninger Museum at the time, who was of great supporter to her during her career as an artist and whom she came to regard as a 'father'. In 1962 he ensured that she entered the Visual Artists Scheme (BKR), so that she can fully focus on her artistry. Amman made about 2000 works mainly on paper and with printing ink. She exhibited in De Mangelgang (1961) and Pictura (1975) and after her death in the Groninger Museum (1984) and the Municipal Museum Arnhem (1989). The Center for Visual Arts Groningen (now Kunstpunt) exhibited her work in 1993 in the series “The Classic Groningers”. Els Amman is considered an important representative of post-war modernism in Groningen.
She painted Cycle in 1972. The painting comes from the collection of paintings that were no longer loaned by the then Center for Visual Arts Groningen (now Kunstpunt).
