Bird's eye view map Groningen

Anco Wigboldus

About this artwork.

Anco Wigboldus (1900 - 1983) was a painter, draftsman, textile artist, ceramist and teacher from Groningen. Wigboldus' work consists of portraits, reliefs and ceramic sculptures. He was mainly known for his drawings of historic buildings and parks and made bird's-eye views of noble possessions in Germany. His predilection for castles earned him the name 'castle painter'.

Wigboldus was a member of the Groningen art society De Ploeg, but found no connection with modernism. He had an eye for detail, which is reflected in his paintings of historic cityscapes. He painted a Bird's eye view map of Groningen in 1969 and is the result of a commission to paint a future cityscape of the city of Groningen. The painting was donated to the city council on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1969.
