Black in Motion

Museum aan de A
11 June 2023 to 7 January 2024

About this activity.

Black in Motion is a kaleidoscopic exhibition by six artists with roots in the African diaspora. It pays tribute to the perseverance and resilience of the black person.

End slavery
On July 1, 1863, slavery in the Dutch colonies was abolished by law. That law also stated that the enslaved on the plantations in Suriname continued to fall under 'supervision of the State' for another 10 years. That meant they were forced to work on plantations until 1873, now paid. That is why in 2023 we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and celebrate freedom.

Six artists
Yet many people still feel the effects of slavery every day. Charles Goudsmit (Makassar, Indonesia, 1954) cook, poet, activist and do-gooder, has put together this kaleidoscope of paintings, poetry, film, photos and objects. by 6 artists who have their roots in the African diaspora: Guillaume Pool (Paramaribo, 1930), Janne Igbuwe (Amsterdam, 1996), Oswaldo Sield (Paramaribo, 1960), Anne-Jesuina (Hamburg, 1989) and E. Rudo Walker (Paramaribo, 1942).

The exhibition is curated by Charles Goudsmit of the Stichting Pittig Gekruid. More info about the exhibition: Zwart in Beweging - Museum aan de A
