Workshop Painting in the open air by Marianne Brouwer

Kunstpunt Groningen
22 May 2022

About this activity.

Do you like painting and have you always wanted to do this outside? Artist Marianne Brouwer is giving a one-off workshop 'painting in the open air' as part of her solo exhibition Dichtbij at Kunstpunt Groningen during the Month of Art on the Street.

This workshop covers the basics of painting on perception in the open air. What's involved? Which composition do you choose? And how do you set up a painting with changing light? You will paint an urban scene and at the end of the workshop you will have a painting measuring 30 x 40 cm (depending on how fast you work). We work with acrylic paint on panel. Some basic knowledge of working with paint is required.

Time: Sunday 22 May, 14.00 - 16.30
Location: Groningen city center (the exact location will follow later in the confirmation email)
Costs: €25 per person, including all necessary materials

Solo exhibition Marianne Brouwer
The latest work by Marianne Brouwer can be seen in Kunstpunt Groningen from 8 April to 28 May. The solo presentation Dichtbij shows colorful paintings in which she explores the boundary between abstract and figurative. Anyone who is close to Brouwer's work mainly sees the first, if you take a few steps back, you see a more recognizable image. This is often her immediate environment: her studio by the swimming pool De Papiermolen or well-known city views of Groningen, such as the Hoge and Lage der A, the Reitdiep and the Noorderhaven. Where she previously mainly found inspiration around the theme of the city, the emphasis in the works that Brouwer shows in the exhibition Close by is mainly on the place where people and nature come together. From a backyard to still lifes of plants in her studio. No grandiose scenes, but the beauty of the everyday.

“You just have to dare to paint like a Monet 150 years and all those big names later how the light falls on the world,” NRC Handelsblad wrote in September 2016 about Brouwer's graduation work, which depicted the Gedempte Zuiderdiep. It is typical of the work of Marianne Brouwer, who, like the French painter Claude Monet (1840-1926), gives an impression of reality.
