Uit het paradijs ('From Paradise')

Museum Klooster Ter Apel
29 March 2025 to 26 October 2025

About this activity.

60 years ago, Carl Gustav Jung's Man and His Symbols was published. The book resonated greatly among artists. Jung's vision of man and art, the unconscious and the symbol, is the inspiration for the exhibition Uit het paradijs ('From Paradise'). Art, mythology, psychology, which can be seen with us from 29 March to 26 October 2025.

Past and present

Immense spiral paintings, tufted 'Joshua trees', and snakes that frame a woman's face while she remains unmoved underneath. In the exhibition Uit het paradijs, visitors walk labyrinthine paths past contemporary and modern art and some particularly historical works: from graphics by Salvador Dalí and Rembrandt to video art by Guido van der Werve and photography by Juul Kraijer. The focus is on 'the journey of man', inspired by the work of depth psychologist C.G. Jung and myth expert Joseph Campbell. Their work has been a source of inspiration for many artists, filmmakers (the ‘Hollywood film’) and novelists for years. In Out of Paradise, the visitor is taken on a journey. To return home purified from the safe environment – paradise – via obstacles.

Participating artists

In Uit het paradijs, work can be seen by Sanne Bax, Charlotte Caspers, Nel Klaassen, Stan Klamer, Juul Kraijer, Ralf Kokke, Thomas Trum and Guido van der Werve. Special loans include Rembrandt’s Prodigal Son and Dali’s Divine Comedy, from the collections of Museum Helmantel, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, the Embassy of the Free Mind and Museum Krona. With thanks to Special Arts, studio for ‘outsider art’, work can also be seen by Guus Schut, Wijnand de Vries, Anna Worrel and Lenneke Zoeteman.

Experience

The route of winding paths along the various works in the exhibition forms a labyrinth. The exhibition design plays with the view of the visitor who sometimes has sight, sometimes half-sight, sometimes no sight. Just like on the paths that people walk in their own lives and along which they develop. Christian myths and symbols that can (also) be seen in the exhibition, are given a new meaning in this artistic reflection of the ‘journey of man’. Art, mythology and psychology go hand in hand in the exhibition Uit het paradijs.
