Twelve years in Ter Apel
About this activity.
All the refugees that apply for an asylum in the Netherlands, must be registered at Ter Apel. Their procedure starts here and there will be looked at their chance of an immigration status.
Freelance photographer Kees van de Veen (1980) captures from 2012 the events that happen near the entrance of the asylum centre, with the center of gravity the reception crisis in the summer of 2022. Due to lack of reception centres, staff shortages and high influx of asylum seekers, the centre became overcrowded. For months people in Ter Apel had to sleep outside.
Van de Veen won with a series about the crisis in Ter Apel in 2023 the first price at the Zilveren Camera in the category National News. In 2021 he already won the Zilveren Camera with a series about the deathbed of coronapatient Piet Franssen.
Debate
On Wednesday the 22th May at 20 o'clock there is a night in Pictura about how you, as a photopgrapher or reporter, deal with distressing social problems like in Ter Apel. Must and can you keep a professional distance getting daily confronted with human suffering?
Do you bring the drama home? How do you approach disruption?
Besides Kees reporters Maaike Borst (Dagblad van het Noorden) and Martijn Klungel (RTV Noord) are present.
The conversation will be led by journalist Leonie Sinnema.

Het Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura in Groningen werd opgericht in 1832 met als doel: 'de beeldende kunst en de nijverheidskunst in de ruimste zin van het woord aan te moedigen en te bevorderen.' Pictura is gehuisvest in een mooi, monumentaal pand aan het Martinikerkhof in Groningen. In de sfeervolle zalen exposeren professionele kunstenaars van uiteenlopende richtingen en disciplines, maar de hoofdmoot is figuratief.
