‘The Red Field’ by Petra van Kalker

From 1 to 31 March 2025, Petra van Kalker, artist from Vinkhuizen, will exhibit a collage of varnished paper entitled ‘The Red Field’ in the window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at the Vinkhuizen shopping centre, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
‘The Red Field’ is a collage with varnished paper measuring 30 x 30 cm from 2018. The roots of Groningue-city resident Petra van Kalker lie in the Hogeland and the Marne in particular. The land of her youth and parents always continues to attract: the well-organised villages recognisable from afar by their church towers, the vast meadows and the fields of rapeseed. Between 2016 and 2019, Van Kalker made an extensive series of landscapes using a special collage technique. She painted sheets of paper. She then treated them with clear varnish, so that they acquired a parchment-like transparency. She then tore the paper into strips and pieces and built collages of landscapes with these strips that do not reflect the visible, but the felt reality. The transparent varnish creates a depth in the landscapes, which makes you feel as if you are standing on the old clay soil. On that soil, the red field also lies, mysteriously, under a heavy sky awaiting the evening.
Petra van Kalker (1952) graduated from ABK Minerva in drawing and graphics. In the course of her more than forty years as an artist, her work developed into refined poetic figurative work. Her work is created associatively, layer by layer and is built up from primal symbols such as houses, boats, fish, heads and hands. In recent years, she has mainly been working on small sculptures, sometimes making excursions into painting.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but then 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is lit until 23:00.
A new work of art by an artist is exhibited every month.
