TEST 3000 Tschumi Cleaning - with Extra Flavor

Tschumipaviljoen
10 July 2024 to 27 October 2024

About this activity.

This summer at the Tschumipavilion, the work TEST 3000 Tschumi Cleaning – with Extra Flavor by Lee Mc Donald will be on display. The piece refers to a cleaning product (or its branding) and plays with the idea of a futuristic window-cleaning machine. The installation resembles a ballet of mechanized sculptures performing a sort of dance, appearing to wave at passersby while cleaning the glass. Meanwhile, the Tschumipavilion becomes cleaner than ever. Or does it? Come and find out for yourself! From July 10 to October 27 at the Hereplein.

The work TEST 3000 Tschumi Cleaning – with Extra Flavor is part of Lee Mc Donald's TEST series. In an interview with Kunstpunt in 2022, he said about this: "I have built up quite a large archive consisting of footage of what I call TESTS. For this series, I develop various types of motorized works that all perform different actions. I don't really know why I make these works, but it is very addictive; so far, I have made more than 2,000 of them." The count is now almost at 3,000, all recorded in different locations and contexts: from a TV attacking itself with a hammer in Lee's own studio to paint cans, swinging from a motor, being pierced and thus creating a mural in a gallery. With his TESTS, Lee seeks ways to capture the energy of the moment, and in particular: the unpredictable movements of the sculpture: "Although I don't know the outcomes of these tests in advance, they often end in self-destruction. Along the way, movements always surprise me, and those little discoveries keep me searching."

The Tschumipavilion

The Tschumipavilion or 'Glass Video Gallery' at the Hereplein in Groningen was designed by French-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. It was built in 1990 as part of the 'What a Wonderful World' event. Since 1995, various temporary multimedia projects by artists from home and abroad have been shown annually. Due to the design of the pavilion, all projects are clearly visible to everyone passing by or waiting for the bus. Since December 2021, the Tschumipavilion has been programmed by Kunstpunt Groningen.
