Marije Vermeulen (1976) lives and works in Apeldoorn and creates murals, paintings and installations in which color, energy and clarity are important aspects.

The tightly executed interplay of lines and the strict division of surfaces are a result of an attentive analysis of a surface or space. What forms are present and with what can be connected? What are the dimensional relationships of a surface? Is there a repetition of sizes or shapes? These elements become players in the design process, along with pieces from Marije's library of colors and shapes, collected over the years. The sources are diverse: They are taken from personal memories, architecture, fashion and previously created works. Through an elaborate sketching process with colored pencil, she then explores the possibilities to arrive at a conceptually correct and at the same time surprisingly playful result. Practical actions such as repeating, tilting, flipping and halving are popular tools to employ in this process.

OFF HOOK.

OFF HOOK is an artist run space for contemporary art and exhibitions. It’s located at the corner of a former chemistry laboratory in Groningen, the Netherlands.

OFF HOOK is founded by Dutch artist Lydia Wierenga, with the goal to invite artists to “do what they want”.

OFF HOOK will also present screen-prints in limited editions and “a little something on the side”.
