Visual artist Maaike Meindertsma is guest artist at the Bierumer School, where she is creating new work. On Friday afternoon, April 26, is the opening of her exhibition SHORTCUT. The exhibition runs through May 26.   

Where the peace and quiet in the Bierumer School almost makes it seem as if time stands still for a moment, the world outside seems to be in a constant state of hurry. During her stay at the Bierumer School, she explores this rush and all the forms it can take. What does haste do to our bodies, but also reflects on how we as humans in today's society are always looking to be shorter, more efficient and faster. The results come together in videos and an installation.

'As a visual artist, I am very much involved with the subject of the body, looking for example at how our bodies relate to our brain and our environment. This fascination stemmed from sports and has crept into my artistic practice little by little over the past few years. In many of my works, I explore the memory and knowledge of the body and want to capture the precision with which it responds to the environment. In those works I place the body in the foreground, but over the past year I began an investigation into where and when the body actually fades into the background. As a result, my work has become a play between, on the one hand, the absent and, on the other, the present body.

The opening of the exhibition SHORTCUT will take place on Friday, April 26 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. That afternoon Paula Biemans will talk with Maaike Meindertsma about her work in the Bierumer School.
