About this activity.

The Regional Historical Center in Stadskanaal recently received nine paintings by the artist Karl Jacob van Beekum from a private individual on long-term loan. Van Beekum is known for his well-known image De Knoalster Lorelei along the Hoofstraat in Stadskanaal, but also for the many paintings of, among other things, Stadskanaalster street views. He mainly painted these between 1962 and 1984.

Karl van Beekum was born in Rotterdam in 1914 and attended the Academy of Visual Arts there. He also obtained his teaching qualification, which in 1955 earned him an appointment at the Ubbo Emmius Lyceum in Stadskanaal and in 1960 at the RHBS (now RSG) in Ter Apel.
In addition to paintings with recognizable locations in Stadskanaal, the exhibition in the SHC also includes a number of still lifes that have never been shown to the public before. The works from the recent loan are supplemented with paintings that the SHC already had on loan from Van Beekum from other collections.
