MASTERPIECE: MUSSORGSKY - PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION
About this activity.
After the success of the first edition of Masterpiece, the Noord Nederlands Orkest and SPOT Groningen will once again delve into the music and story of a symphonic masterpiece on Friday 18 October. The evening will start in a festival atmosphere, as a relaxed voyage of discovery through De Oosterpoort. Visitors will go from section to section and decide for themselves what they want to see or hear and in what order.
This time, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition will be turned inside out. Together with guests such as former commander of the armed forces Peter van Uhm, pianist Thomas Beijer and NPO Klassiek presenter Jet Berkhout, the Netherlands' most famous tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher & Eric Corton and NNO musicians, you will discover who Mussorgsky was and what story lies behind his famous work. NNO percussionist Stefan Kirschbaum will once again provide an interactive workshop - a hit during the first edition - and the Club Guy & Roni's Poetic Disasters Club will create a short dance performance inspired by the piece. Only when you have learned everything about the piece and the composer will the Noord Nederlands Orkest let you hear it from A to Z.
Have you ever listened to music and wondered what it would sound like if it were a painting? That is exactly what Modest Mussorgsky did when he composed his masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition. It is like visiting an exhibition where every painting comes to life through music. The Russian composer wrote the work in 1874 after visiting an exhibition of the painter Viktor Hartmann, a good friend who had died shortly before. While composing, Mussorgsky thought about how he had walked around the exhibition, enjoying the paintings, but also grieving the loss of Hartmann.
Pictures at an Exhibition begins with the Promenade, a theme that recurs between most of the paintings. Mussorgsky then takes you to a wonderful world: the fairytale hut of the witch Baba Yaga, the ballet of chicks in the making, children playing in a park, talking skulls and, as the icing on the musical cake, The Great Gate of Kyiv.
Originally, Pictures at an Exhibition consisted of sixteen pieces for piano. After Ravel arranged it for symphony orchestra in 1922, it grew into the classical hit that the NNO will let you hear under the direction of Finnish conductor Emilia Hoving. But before that, we will all delve into the story behind this masterpiece and you will get to know Mussorgsky better. Because who was this man, who started out as an officer in the Russian army, grew into a famous composer, but eventually died, destroyed by drink, at the age of 42?
