Galerie Peter ter Braak presents the exhibition ‘Sitting Inside’, a series of paintings created during and in the aftermath of the Corona period, made by Mario ter Braak, who is exhibiting again in his own hometown of Groningen after 20 years.
Mario ter Braak (Hengelo 1960) sheds new light on the meaning within the genre of still life with his paintings. His colourful paintings are about how we perceive, about the conventions of painting and refer to art historical motifs. He is inspired by how we communicate and especially by the Groningen Fish Market as his amusement park. Ter Braak appeals to looking differently by showing the seemingly familiar differently.
The ‘gateway’ to looking, the illusion of fruits and fish, is taken by Ter Braak as his subject.
Arranging it into an image is his means of providing space for everyone’s looking and thinking.
The fruit, being a timeless and trendless object, grows according to the principle of symmetry,
just as our thinking, building and painting also develops; however much we may want to deviate from this. Ter Braak basically arranges his images from the center. He stages nature - the fruits and fish that he finds at the Vismarkt around the corner - where the frame is a table top that coincides with the painting; that is why he also calls his paintings 'Table Edges'.
He approaches each fruit as an individual by using the realistic visual language, by looking with respect and listening carefully. However, in the 90° frame, which he sees as the form of human thinking, he is allowed to dominate in a manipulative way.
In this exhibition, Mario ter Braak also shows a constellation of works that he made during the Corona period from the forced 'sitting inside'. From early to late, as a home worker in an office position, he looked out onto his 'Yellow Inner Garden' in his studio. And from his studio window he greeted the beautiful Magnolia every day, his spring queen, who had been inside all her existence, there in the walled setting of the Pelsterhofje.
