Marianne Brouwer - Dichtbij
About this activity.
From April 8 to May 28, the latest work by Marianne Brouwer can be seen in Kunstpunt Groningen. The solo presentation Dichtbij (‘Close’) shows her colorful paintings in which she explores the boundary between abstract and figurative. She mainly found inspiration for her most recent work in places where people and nature come together, such as the Stadspark and her plant-rich studio nearby public swimming pool De Papiermolen. No grandiose scenes, but the beauty of everyday.
Painting like a modern Monet
“You just have to dare to paint like a Monet, 150 years and all those big names later, how the light falls on the world,” NRC Handelsblad wrote in September 2016 about Brouwer's graduation work, in which the Gedempte Zuiderdiep occupied a central place. The author of the piece praised Brouwer' painting style: “I’v rarely seen trees waving so beautifully in a painting”. It is typical of the work of Brouwer, who, like the French painter Claude Monet (1840-1926), gives an impression of reality.
Brouwer often – but not always – starts with a sketch that she puts on the canvas with markers. Then she starts painting according to the principle of trying and adjusting: while she is working she notices where she wants to go, how she wants to use the paint, which colors go well and how the composition should be. In this way the new work is created while painting. Her paintings are colorful and the pleasure of painting is just exuberant.
About Marianne Brouwer
Marianne Brouwer (Buitenpost, 1993) graduated from Minerva Academy in 2016. In 2019 she won the audience award for Young Talent at the Art Noord art fair in Museum Belvédère (Heerenveen). In addition to making art herself, she also gives painting lessons to children and adults at art center VRIJDAG.
Marianne Brouwer's choice
For this exhibition, Marianne Brouwer also shows her favorite works from the Kunstuitleen collection. She based her selection on her preference for the (urban) landscape and a clear touch, which is in line with her own work. “My first eye is always painting, but there is also photography, drawings and graphics in between. In addition, a certain mystery or elusiveness appeals to me in the work. Where the day turns into night or where the performance almost turns into abstraction.” For example, she chose work by Marten Klompien, Otto Krol, Bert Mebius, Hilmar Schäfer and Alida Everts.
Ateliercollectie: Solo
Dichtbij is part of the Ateliercollectie: Solo series. In this exhibition series we present work by northern artists. The art comes straight from their studios. All works of art can be borrowed and/or purchased in our Kunstuitleen.
