Marcel Duran – ‘Painting Strokes’ | in the Monastery Church of Thesinge
Kloosterkerk, Thesinge
12 April 2025 to 27 April 2025
About this activity.
From 12 to 27 April, Marcel Duran will be showing recent work in the 13th century Monastery Church of Thesinge.
For Marcel Duran, painting all kinds of subjects from his immediate surroundings is always interesting and challenging. From the intimacy of a woman in an interior while reading the morning paper to a view of the cloudy sky reflecting rice fields on Java.
City, country and sea keep recurring in his work. For example, Duran often paints in the city centre of Groningen, reflected by the deep, the lively market, the park. He alternates this with trips to other cities, but also to the coast and the beaches where he finds his motifs. With precise strokes, Duran expresses in oil paint what moves him. “Sometimes I have to stand among the bathers, at a high point, or even in the water. I want to stay with my first impression, so I only paint what reinforces that impression. I keep up the pace, because the weather and light change quickly. The fact that sometimes something goes wrong is part of the adventure, just as I can be surprised by what comes out of my hands."
Duran is also known for his portraits, painted with character and flair, often on commission. For example, he has painted a considerable number of portraits of professors for the RUG. In addition to paintings, Duran also does spatial work. A number of bronze-cast sculptures can be seen in the exhibition. Where brushstrokes bring his paintings to life, he achieves the same with his sculptures. The direct touch of his hands is palpable there.
