Looking inside at Matthijs Röling

Museum Wierdenland
17 December 2022 to 4 June 2023

About this activity.

Come and have a look at Matthijs Röling (1943) in Museum Wierdenland: at his paintings and the murals he made in his own home.

Röling is celebrating his eightieth birthday in Museum Wierdenland with a major anniversary exhibition that was created in close collaboration with him and his family. From the selection of the paintings to the furnishing. A tribute to a great artist. In addition to many paintings, attention is also paid to the interior of his home in Ezinge, where he made various murals and has lived for more than fifty years.

Röling occupies a prominent place in Dutch art history. At a time when many started to work abstractly, he deliberately stayed on the figurative path. He developed his own style, inspired by the Italian Renaissance. It is not for nothing that Röling is also called 'the youngest of the old masters'.

The theme of the exhibition is 'inside', with paintings of interiors, still lifes and portraits, among other things, which also give a glimpse into someone's interior. Artist Mischa Keijser (1974) photographed the interior of the monumental farm in Ezinge, where Röling has lived since 1972. A selection of these photos can also be seen in Museum Wierdenland. Röling has painted murals throughout his house. Highlights for him are the paintings in his studio, kitchen and conservatory. It is uncertain what will happen to the house in the future.

The exhibition in Museum Wierdenland was made possible by a financial contribution from the Beringer Hazewinkel Foundation and the Emmaplein Foundation.
