Where nostalgia strips away nuance, the void it leaves is filled by desire.
Michal Kruger makes work at the intersection of nostalgia and shame. He creates spaces in which cliches are confronted and embraced, simultaneously encouraging our expectations and subverting their conclusions. If memories are constructed then our recollection of them is a process of world building. In this world the wilderness is tamed and agrarianism is
industrialised.
Within his work, Kruger explores the formation of his own memories through recurring icons from farms, safaris and suburban interiors. Employing a range of mediums, such as oil pastel, wood carving and painting, he captures a cultural white Afrikaner nostalgia for a place and time that never existed. The materials he uses are reduced to blunt gestures which depict the world as a crude drawing. Kruger addresses his position in the Netherlands as an exploration into how the landscape is intrinsically connected to that of South Africa.
In this context he acknowledges his perpetual tourist status, both at home and away.
Michal Kruger was born in South Africa and lives in Groningen. He received his bachelor's degree from Rhodes University in South Africa in 2016 and his master's from the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen in 2020. He was awarded a contribution Artist Start from the Mondriaan Fonds in 2022. His work has been exhibited at home and abroad, including at the Drents Museum.

Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter.
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
