‘King Jesus hath a garden’ by Marius de Schaar

Raamgalerie De Prachtvink
1 December 2024 to 31 December 2024

About this activity.

From 1 to 31 December 2024, Marius de Schaar, artist from Vinkhuizen, will exhibit a cut-out in red and blue paper ‘Lord Jesus hath a garden’ in the window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at the Vinkhuizen shopping centre, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

‘King Jesus hath a garden’ is a triptych of three small cut-outs in a cornice of 27 x 20 cm. ‘King Jesus hath a garden’ in Dutch ‘Heer Jesus heeft een hofken daar schoon bloemen staan’ is one of the older Dutch devotional songs, mainly sung during the Christmas season. The song was included in the collection ‘Het Prieel der Gheestelycke melodie’ from 1609 in Bruges. The collection was used by the Jesuits in their catechism instruction. The text (with a small variation) without melody was already in a collection from 1577 from Leuven. The song is disarmingly naive in which various flowers symbolize pious virtues. In the 19th century, the text was translated into English by George Woodward as ‘King Jesus hath a garden’. Charles Wood arranged the melody for choral music. Later, more arrangements followed, including that of the composer John Rutter in 1981. The performances of the song by British boys' choirs are a special treat for the ear.

In September 2024, Marius de Schaar found a special kitsch frame for three photos in the shape of a crown at the glass container behind the Lidl in Vinkhuizen. The side frames are oval-shaped, the middle window heart-shaped. The discarded frame inspired the paper-cut artist to appropriately depict this beloved song.

Marius de Schaar has been a paper-cut artist since 2009. He makes New Dutch paper-cut work. He likes to take his subjects from his immediate surroundings, from toothpaste to garbage bins. Marius has a special interest in flowers. With paper and scissors he cuts sustainable bouquets, for which do no poison is used and which do not wilt. Marius de Schaar has exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Rijksmuseum. His work is included in various private collections.

The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but then 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is lit up until 23:00.
