"Is it safe?" Starting 16 March, ARTisBOOK will explore the implications of this seemingly innocuous question through Naa Oyo A. Kwate's book Is It Safe? Kwate's book invites us to consider the political and social dimensions of safety while travelling. For who actually determines what is safe - and safe for whom? And how are ideas about safety shaped by class and racism? Is It Safe? is part of our two-year programme travel, during which we explore the political and poetic dimensions of travelling.

On March 28th, at 7 p.m., we will read together the introduction of Is It Safe? by Naa Oyo Kwate and an essay by Nanjala Nyabola from the essay collection Travelling While Black: Essays Inspired by a Life on the Move.
On April 11th, at 7 p.m., the reading group will convene again to develop contributions for a small publication that will be released after the exhibition.

Stichting ARTisBOOK.
Stichting ARTisBOOK is een onderzoeks- en presentatieruimte voor hedendaagse kunstenaarsboeken en haar makers. In samenwerking met de kunstenaars creëren we programma’s waarin gastvrijheid, collectiviteit, experimenteren en kennisuitwisseling centraal staan. We dagen de kunstenaar uit ‘te spelen met ideeën over het kunstenaarsboek’ en nieuwe relaties te onderzoeken tussen hun werk en het publiek.
Door onze samenwerking met andere ruimtes en organisaties ontstaan er kruisbestuivingen en nieuwe mogelijkheden om ons programma met een breed publiek te ontwikkelen en te onderzoeken. Als kenniscentrum voorzien we studenten en kunstenaars van advies, ons archief is publiekelijk toegankelijk en er worden gesprekken en gastlessen met de exposerende kunstenaars georganiseerd.
