Using words as building blocks for an image? Or just the other way around? Join this short, one-day workshop at VRIJDAG and combine mixed techniques with your words!

A sign next to a painting; you will often not find more words in an exhibition space. And yet there are many visual artists who incorporate words into their art. Words in works of art can be humorous, political, prosaic or poetic. They can say something about language and meaning, or play with the shape or color of the letters. They can serve as images or as language.

In this workshop we take you into the world of words in the visual arts by letting you experiment yourself. You will also work on your own image and word work. You work with mixed media on paper to tell your story. For example, you use paint, ink, rope, paper, sand, letters and words.

We spend the morning hours on writing technique and visual mixed media. After lunch you will work on your own image and word work under the supervision of both teachers. At the end of the day you take your work home. You do not need any writing or painting experience to participate. A sense of experimentation is essential.
