‘In Passing’ by the Belgian photographer Gerdi Willems

The passing of time and how to capture this in a still image
Whizzing landscapes, fleeting still lifes and tranquil portraits form a series of suggestive images, linked to transience, loss and melancholy. The ephemeral is central as a theme, and she wants to capture exactly that intangible through a focus on texture and abstraction and through the graphic atmosphere. The images play with a tactile presence that evokes a state of tranquility. 

The series highlights Willems’ approach to the medium of photography
For her, photography is not a snapshot of something one experiences or what is happening, but it is photography itself that experiences the moment and makes something happen. 

Photography changes the view
It makes you alert to what passes you by, and makes you pause in the passing. Carpe diem here becomes: reap the beauty in the fleeting, in the everyday and the banal. This is the downside, as a counterweight to the melancholy that the passage of time evokes. 
Gerdi Willems is good at observing small, inconspicuous things. Her camera looks for lines of light, and discovers, frames, shows something that the eye may or may not see, in any case differently. 

Using simple techniques such as long shutter speeds, soft focus, reflections, over- and underexposure, transparency, multiple exposure and blending, she creates complex images that reflect the slowing down of time and the passing of time.
