‘I have worked hard to accomplish nothing’ by Subreal Alchemy
About this activity.
From 1 to 31 January 2025, Subreal Alchemy, artist from Philadelphia, will exhibit a mail art work ‘I have worked hard to accomplish nothing’ in the window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at shopping centre Vinkhuizen, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
‘I have worked hard to accomplish nothing’ is a mail art work that consists of a piece of corrugated cardboard on which a printed photo is glued and on the back side a text is printed amidst various stamps. The work measures 11 x 15.5 cm. The work is numbered as # 1899 and was made in 2023. The photo in shades of grey is mysterious. It appears to be a bird shape that is taking a seat on the tiled floor, but it could be something completely different. It could also be that it is simply a failed photo. The text that accompanies the work reads: ‘I have worked hard to accomplish nothing. Though unlike many who work hard to accomplish something. I have a large repertoire to show on how I got to nothing.’
Subreal Alchemy suggests that the text is a quote from a certain Dr. N.O. Pibbles. However, behind Mr. Pibbles, the spiritual father of Subreal Alchemy seems to be hiding, David Stanley Aponte. Image and text, together with a grin, pose a disconcerting question to the viewer about the reason for doing things. Isn’t actually doing much more important than the result of acting? And if that is the case, then it is better to do things that you like.
Subreal Alchemy is the alter ego of David Stanley Aponte, a painter, graphic artist, poet, and DJ. He expresses himself under various personae, of which Subreal Alchemy is the most used. He draws his inspiration from avant-garde art from the 20th century such as Dada, Fluxus and Punk. Aponte played underground music in Chicago, Dallas and Berlin and has been living and working in Philadelphia for about ten years, where he is largely involved in setting up mail art networks.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but then 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is lit up until 23:00. Every month a new work of art by an artist is exhibited.
