Gerrit Korteweg - Aantekeningen ('Notes')
For Gerrit Korteweg (Malang 1937 - Haren 2022), painting was an ode to the world around him. As an architect he gave buildings shape and place in the world, in his drawings and paintings he sang 'loose' that same world again. Drawing was his 'second nature'. For a lifetime he drew in small sketches that which happened to touch his eye and heart. Wonderful little notes - lightly noted with often a touch of humour. He also painted from the 1980s. The Groninger Ploeg painters and expressionists of the early 20th century inspired him.
Entirely in his own way - also his point of view - he shows us his world: colorful, simplified, direct and above all from his own perspective, playful and surprising. A visual language without frills. In the last years of his life he turned his gaze to the memories of his childhood in the Dutch East Indies, Indonesia. A childhood strongly influenced by the war years and all the experiences gained back then. He has rediscovered his childhood experiences in a characteristic way: Growing up on a company in the mountains of East Java, the outbreak of war, internment and life with mother and brother in the closed world of Japanese camps, the turbulent time between liberation and repatriation to the Netherlands and the new Dutch life that started then.
This resulted in a series of sketches and drawings. He wrote short texts to accompany it, after which he decided to bundle and publish it. It has become a small but fine book which he called Aantekeningen ('Notes') and which is now in a fourth edition in small editions.
The exhibition shows a wide selection from the colorful work of Gerrit Korteweg, with special attention to the Indian drawings and the booklet Aantekeningen.
