'Fate does what it wants' by Guido Utermark

From August 1 to 31, 2024, Guido Utermark, artist from The Hague, will exhibit a collage 'Fate does what it wants' in the window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

'Fate does what it wants' is a collage of 21 x 29.7 cm from 2023. The pasted paper parts are laminated together in plastic into a solid composition. Utermark sent the work as part of his year-long RAP mail art project: Return to Sender Project, in which Utermark fills a received envelope with new mail art material and returns it to the original sender. In his visual work, Utermark is mainly concerned with collages, often digital, but sometimes also in tangible material. This collage exudes a warm Christmas atmosphere under a philosophical title.  The artist personifies fate by using the photo of a young woman with a dog, suggesting that her name may be 'Lotte'. According to Utermark, fate is not that bad or scary. Typical for Utermark are the references to screen culture and the low pixels in the background photo.

Guido Utermark (1960) is an artist and poet from The Hague. As a poet he is mainly active with found texts and neo-Dada. He published several collections, including 'I can explain everything to you' and 'Connection, no contact'. As a visual artist, he focuses on collages with an ironic slant, often in black and white with a sober use of color. “Fate does what it wants” is an exception in its colorfullness. He is also a well known member of the mail art world.
