About this activity.

Eline Peek (1970, HKU) her work is about beauty, malleability, vulnerability and identity. The tension between fear and what binds and divides us; 'the self' and 'the stranger'. About identity, who we are with or without the other. And about perception, about interpreting and then judging: do you do that within those few seconds or do you take longer to allow the other? I want to touch and be touched. That can be very small, but also very big; wonder, recognition and comfort.

“In my painting, layering plays a big role. I like to get carried away in the scenic nature of the skin that emerges. These painted transparent layers and structures form maps of events, as it were, that make a person who he is. Almost everyone struggles with imperfection. I look for individuality and beauty in the imperfect. In my recent work, I take myself as a starting point. In this series of self-portraits, I try to capture states of mind that are current for me. In an age of 'ideal' selfies, I am precisely not looking for an 'ideal' translation of reality but rather seeking the vulnerable, impermanent and the slightly disturbing.”
