Karwan Abdulla I consider my paintings as self-portraits
Karwan Abdulla (Sulaimanya, Kurdistan, 1968)
In addition to his studies at the HTS, Karwan started painting and sculpting. Due to his political activities, he ended up in prison in 1985, after which he fled to the Netherlands in 1993. There, his creativity resurfaced and he was able to express his emotions through colours. The colour compositions in particular inspire him to create experiments in the form of sculptures and paintings. He uses various types of paint and clay for the abstract sculptures. Figurative or abstract, impressive or expressive, the idea is the starting point and any style is permitted for its execution. Living in a zap culture, Karwan consciously works in different styles.
‘In terms of content, I am driven in my ‘quest’ by my fascination for contrasts and the way in which they influence each other. While maintaining the contrast, I try to find unity and balance in one image. The contrast ‘chaos and order’ always returns. I no longer see these concepts as incompatible extremes, but as two ‘forces’ that cannot exist without each other. Chaos is not a lack of order, but simplicity that lies behind complexity. A dynamic process that, fed by consciousness, leads to order. I call chaos ‘rhythm’.
For some time now, I have had the idea that contradictions do not exist at all or hardly at all. My perception and frame of reference determine my observation and reality. That is why I consider my paintings as self-portraits’.

Arne Brink I invite you to look differently and discover!
Arne Brink (Meppel, 1991)
‘As an artist, I look around me and see major issues that play a role in society to which I give my visual response. Themes that inspire me are climate change, biodiversity, innovation and science. With a contrasting fascination for the vast, vulnerable nature and heavy technology such as cars, ships and industry. Contrasts can also connect and lead to new ideas. This is reflected in my works in the Forma Aktua gallery. My vision is meticulously elaborated in large-format drawings.
My mission is to give you, with my works, new fundamental ways of thinking that you can continue to associate with. Works that inspire and tell impactful stories. Grand gestures that encourage great action. An Arne Brink is not only a work of art on the wall, but also a vision that challenges you to look and think fundamentally differently.
Armed with a Bic ballpoint pen and a piece of paper, Arne conjures up an infinite, both futuristic and nostalgic world. The visitor is tempted to lose their own reality in the drawings. Purely through the experience of looking.
In addition to free work, he also makes commissioned works. These can be illustrations but also animations in which illustrations play a major role.
Arne Brink graduated from the Minerva Academy in Groningen as an illustrator. He specializes in pen drawings and does not use the traditional ink pen, but black Bic pens. Sometimes combined with colored fineliners. His work is recognizable by the meticulous attention to detail in often large-format drawings. Metamorphoses play a role in many of his works. The longer you look, the more details become apparent.
He has exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Meppel, Galerie Lucassen in Ommen and Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, among others.
Aldrik Salverda It is an adventure, I often don't know where I will end up!
Aldrik Salverda (1952)
'For me, creating a work is a way to free my head, to remove limitations. To reveal my feelings, my thoughts. I find my inspiration in the landscapes around me: the Veenkoloniën, old cave paintings and while travelling. I use gouges, files and rasps to attack the surface of the carrier. I make lines, structures, surfaces, which I draw, paint or print on top of each other in transparent layers. In addition to drawings, I make lithographs, silkscreens, carborundum prints, woodcuts, paintings and installations'.
In 2020, Aldrik celebrated his 35th anniversary as a printer for Collega-Kunstenaars with exhibitions in Friesland, Drenthe and Groningen.
Aldrik Salverda is a versatile artist who lives and works in Kiel Windeweer (Groningen). He was trained at the Vrije Academie in The Hague and ABK Minerva (painting, graphics) and has exhibited in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, France, England, Israel and the US.
