Exhibition Gestolde Emotie
About this activity.
The works of Paul Boyer, Buddy Hermans and Marijke Kloosterman each have a unique approach to the creative process, but share a common theme: the power of spontaneous expression and the search for balance between form and content.
Paul Boyer I don’t paint nature, I am nature
Paul Boyer studied at the St. Joost Academy in Breda and the ’63 Academy in Haarlem. From 1969 to 1987 he made use of the Visual Artists Scheme (BKR), a period in which his work underwent a clear development. While his early works were figurative and sometimes surreal—often accompanied by biting or ironic text fragments—his focus shifted from 1976 to abstract-geometric drawings and collages.
Since 2017, Boyer has radically changed his approach. While his earlier work was based on a clear plan, he now starts from intuition. Stains and stripes without direct coherence form the starting point, after which he searches for logic and balance by adding new elements. This intuitive process leads to an organic growth process between maker and work, in which a coherence ultimately emerges that completes the work.
In line with this method, Boyer completely excludes figuration. His work is autonomous and has no reference outside itself. This idea is in line with Jackson Pollock's statement from 1950: 'I don't paint nature. I am nature'. For Boyer, there is no longer a separation between subject and object—the work is a direct manifestation of the maker.
For this exhibition, Boyer has made a selection of works from the past three years. His recent work shows a profound exploration of spontaneity, order and the tension between them.
Buddy Hermans Congealed emotion
Buddy Hermans (1947) Groningen about his work:
I call my work ‘congealed emotion’.
My work is sometimes intensely coloured but still poetic and lyrical in tone.
Many of my paintings breathe the atmosphere of the 50s and 60s. The mood of that moment permeates my work. Sometimes it is cheerful but always melancholic.
Buddy works from his feelings. He does not put ideas on paper or make sketches, but is guided by inspiration, intuition and emotions. His work has a lot to do with his state of mind at the moment. He then thinks of the temporary nature of things, the impulsiveness of doing or, for example, the experience of beauty during a walk or the late sunlight that shines on the wallpaper in a special way. Fragments of thoughts from his youth also sometimes form the elements that he converts into visual language. These can be moments that he relives while painting. Sometimes his work is fragile and careful and then again intense and with the use of many colours and contours. It is important to him to find and apply balance and harmony in his work.
Marijke Kloosterman Image builder with signs and symbols
Marijke Kloosterman works in three disciplines; textiles, painting, and ceramics. In recent years, the emphasis has been on ceramics. In contrast to the sculptor, who removes material, she feels more like an image builder. She builds her images entirely with rolls of clay. Because a number of images are almost man-sized, they are fired in parts. In Forma Aktua we would like to introduce you to her ceramic works. All her ceramic objects are hand-formed. She makes landscape bowls, memorial images, and 'signs and beacons on your path', among other things, in which she is mainly inspired by old cultures and the traces that have remained of them. She is clearly influenced in her design by these previous or old cultures. Her work naturally includes signs and symbols that refer to this. Housing and especially protection and shelter are also a theme. Characteristic is the bronze appearance of the objects with colorful accents. She makes her own glazes for this, with which any desired mattness, gloss and color intensity can be achieved. Due to the high firing, the works are frost-resistant and can be placed both indoors and outdoors.
