About this activity.

Grietje Nieuwhof: The Dodo as a connection between heaven and earth.

Grietje Nieuwhof (Waskemeer, 1958) has been a hand-shaping ceramicist/visual artist since 1990. She took ceramic classes for a short period and thus found her passion for ceramics. She now has extensive experience with the disciplines of sculpting, various firing techniques, bronze and painting. Her objects are very varied in appearance. From a great creative feeling, the works of art grow naturally in her studio, sometimes with reused material. Grietje has a great passion for Dodo-like birds and the past comes to life in her work. Her expressions are imaginative and certainly not everyday. She uses her own visual language; you could also say that she draws on her own inner knowing and the collective consciousness of humanity. This style can now be called technically perfect. From the hollow round shape, Grietje is able to depict the animal kingdom and other creatures. She started with the theme of birds and never let go of it. This is how the passion for the prehistoric bird arose: the Dodo. You could see the dodo as a metaphor for man, whose earthly body is tied to earthly life. The bird is seen as the connection between heaven and earth.

Eza Weijer: My work arises from my dream images
Eza Weijer (Veendam, 1981) already had a rich imagination as a child, drew a lot and wrote stories. She continued to draw to shape her own imagination and dreams. She then wanted to go to the Art Academy, but graduated in International Business in Leeds (England). Neither the field of study nor the business world suited her, so she started working with children. This brought back her inspiration for painting, drawing and writing, after which, in addition to her free work, the picture book Bird and Whale was created. Eza now thinks that it was a good thing that she did not attend an academy. This allows her to work uninhibitedly, without fixed frameworks and guidelines for how things should be done. This gives her a great sense of freedom. The characters, landscapes and settings that she paints arise from  spontaneous imagination. She starts by making a sketch from a (dream) image, feeling, atmosphere or shape, after which she adds details during the elaboration. The work then arises from itself, spontaneously. In her work she uses acrylic paint as the main material, also in combination with grease chalk, colored pencil, scraps of paper and drawing ink.

Simon Sänger: I mix fantasy with surrealism
Simon Sänger (Bremen, 1999) has been studying at the Minerva Academy in Groningen since 2019, where he organized, among other things, the project The Great Cuckoo. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Illustration Design in 2023. Simon prefers to work with acrylic and oil paint in beautiful shades. He draws and paints from a mix of fantasy and surrealism, in which he takes us as viewers into the wonderful world of imaginative and often colorful animals and monsters. These finely painted images stimulate everyone's imagination and make you curious about this different and exciting world.
