Etruscans: Splendor and Power

Museum Wierdenland
8 June 2024 to 12 January 2025

About this activity.

The first inhabitants settled in Ezinge 2,500 years ago. In the same period elsewhere in Europe, the Etruscan civilization was experiencing its heyday. With this exhibition, Museum Wierdenland provides a glimpse into the special world of the Etruscans: a highly developed people who ruled central Italy long before the Romans.

The Etruscans are the first major civilization in Italy, between the ninth and first centuries BC. They are in contact with other ancient societies, such as the Egyptians, the Syrians, the Greeks and later the Romans. Discover the beauty of Etruscan culture and the influence of the Etruscans on the world around them. Bronze mirrors and gold jewelry highlight their wealth, while imported Greek vases and exported bronze jugs hint at their distant trade links. Questions about their origins, language and mysterious prediction practices are also discussed. Various sacrificial statues and richly decorated ash chests provide insight into the world of gods and funerary culture of the Etruscans.

The exhibition Etruscans: Splendor and Power was created in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities) in Leiden. All archaeological objects on display come from the national collection.
