ESNS Art 2025 | Talent van Hier

SIGN
16 January 2025 to 18 January 2025

About this activity.

TALENT VAN HIER is an initiative to increase the visibility of Groningen talent in the disciplines of visual arts, performing arts, literature and pop culture. This is done by offering additional presentation platforms at festivals, stages and cultural institutions.

Grand Theatre Groningen is the initiator and coordinator in its role as Cultural Pillar Talent for the Municipality of Groningen and collaborates with various cultural organisations in the municipality of Groningen.

The talents within the discipline of visual arts are presented during ESNS at the institutions Sign, NP3, het resort, Kunstpunt and Noorderlicht. The presentations consist of various works of art and performances where the theme ties in with ESNS.

This is what you can discover:

📍 het resort | Nieuwe Sint Jansstraat 35 Groningen
đŸ—“ī¸ Saturday 18 January
🕚 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Het resort organises a breakfast and wellness. Take a break from too much partying, beer and music. The public can come for breakfast and the Groningen artist Igor Bobeldijk will pamper the visitors.
The performative breakfast buffet is served by robots that are remotely controlled by operators. They see the public from the perspective of the robots on their operator desk. The operators each control a serving robot that each serves a delicious and nutritious breakfast.

Adriaan Bon, also known as Zachte Man live on keyboard, provides the music. The music: ambient sci-fi wellness, will be a mix of background music with an occasional improvised impulse or movement. When the robots are not active, they can move freely with the music.

🕑 2:00-8.30 p.m.

The Longing project can be seen at Sign, which starts on 18 January. For this exhibition, young artists Dakota Magdalena Mokhammad, Muzammil Hussain, Sofiia Dubyna, Jaasir Linger will create new work on site in the form of monumental murals, large wall constellations, 2D (textile) works, paper collages, supplemented with subtle 3D elements on walls or ceilings, drawings and paintings directly on the walls.

That same day, the exhibition comes to life with a one-day event HYPERTROVE. HYPERTROVE presents critical pop culture/music related performances that relate to the subject of Longing and adds a dynamic layer to the exhibition.

HyperTrove delves deeper into themes such as identity and self-perception, examining self-representation in contemporary media; concepts that resonate with Longing and the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival.

📍 NP3 | Hofstraat 21
đŸ—“ī¸ Saturday 18 January
🕐 1-5 p.m.

NP3 presents Ra’fat Ali and Katie Ceekay. They are the current LABitat artists in NP3 | RE:Search:Gallery, where they are working on the next step in their artistic research. During Talent van Hier they present their latest developments to the public.

Katie approaches art as a verb, in which she puts stimulating discussion and debate above the material. She positions herself at the intersection of community building and political intervention.

By questioning the elements of film, Ra’fat investigates the structures of his own identity and the confusion he faces outside his own city, away from his mother tongue, Arabic.

For Talent van Hier, Katie marks the transition from the first steps in building a creative coalition of Northern artists to undertaking the first intervention actions. Ra’fat presents a new installation, based on a key moment from his current film project, with which he takes his research further.

The LABitat trajectory is an innovative program in which artists collaborate with the NP3 team to explore specific research projects or exhibition concepts. Without strict timelines, artists are given the time and space to work on the development of their artistic practice. Within LABitat, several artists go through their own development trajectory, which varies in time and form. This results in a diverse and dynamic community, in which artists such as Katie and Ra’fat can also reflect on each other's progress.

📍 Noorderlicht | Akerk
đŸ—“ī¸ Saturday 18 January
đŸŽŸī¸ Admission € 6,- / students € 4,50

In his installation Breaking the News, on display in the exhibition Pixel Perceptions, Franc, the artist's alter ego, explores how algorithms manipulate the news. He uses headlines taken directly from mainstream media and manipulates the photos to create a different narrative, delivering sharp socio-political commentary. The installation contains more than a hundred generative news items displayed on screens hanging from scaffolding. In addition, images of urban interventions created by the artist are presented in the same format as the news. The work powerfully illustrates how algorithms determine what we see and what we don't, and raises questions about the reliability of news in the digital domain and on social media.

Franc Archive is developing a live performance especially for Talent van Hier in which he shares his screen with the audience and manipulates the news in real time. In this way, the audience can directly observe his working method and discover the techniques he uses to create his installation.

In addition, he adds AI-generated voices to the headlines that can be heard simultaneously, creating an overwhelming soundscape that completes the experience.

📍 Kunstpunt | Grote Markt
đŸ—“ī¸ Thursday 16 + Friday 17 January

Koos Buist is developing a work of art especially for ESNS that can be seen on location. With this work 'O Denneboom', Koos shows his involvement with current themes. He seizes the moment of the event to make the public aware of its behavior.
In this case, about the way we deal with nature. How we use and/or abuse it. Sustainability and climate change are themes that form the basis for this.
Based on Koos's intrinsic interest in the soil, nature, the mystical and the way we deal with it, he knows how to involve the public in the question marks that we may ask about our dealings with the earth in a subtle but also playful way.

His plan is linked to a participatory element and educational program that delves deeper into the underworld and the mystical nature of nature, and in particular the Christmas tree.

In a tent on the Grote Markt near his artwork, Koos gives a workshop for Talent van Hier in which he makes root creatures with passers-by. Koos is experienced in building figures from found materials. Tree roots, rope, stone, feathers, reed, clay and twigs/sticks are the basic materials.

By actively working together, a conversation arises about how people deal with and use nature.
