'Envy' by Giovanni Donaudi

From 1 to 31 July 2024, Giovanni Donaudi, an artist from Italy, will exhibit a mail art work 'Envy' in the window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
'Envy' is a mail art work measuring 21 x 29.7 cm made in 2024. The artwork depicts the head of a woman in profile. She sees something she doesn't like and expresses it with a grimace on her face. Jealousy is clearly an ugly trait, because it certainly doesn't make people prettier. Donaudi edited a copy of a photo with felt-tip pens. The bright colors he used for the pupil in the left eye, blue, and the lips, red, give the head a cartoonish look. The jealous atmosphere is emphasized by the dark green. As usual, this image seems to tell, mankind turns out to be only a clown in this stage that is the world. It is no coincidence that with this mail art work the artist refers to the famous portrait of the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri, who has been known for centuries for his Divine Comedy.
Giovanni Donaudi is a mail artist from Imperia, Italy who has been active in the international mail art world for years. In his shipments he likes to opt for collage and simple photo editing, with which he makes the images that spectators are presented with every day grotesque and unattractive. Through the careless use of stamps, the disregard of conventions such as the golden ratio or balance and raw handwritten text, he likes to emphasize the special lack of aesthetics.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
