REAL ART - the rise of Groninger graffiti

About this activity.

In the 1980s, the area between the old Groninger Museum, the Pump House and the current Museum at the A was shadowy, decaying and severely impoverished. This is the atmosphere of the formative years of artist and filmmaker Gabriel Lester. Lester, a former graffiti artist and hip-hop musician, grew up in Groningen creating street art. He and his friends used the city's walls as their canvas. With his ever-changing video installation Definitively Def - 2024, he takes visitors back to the feel of the 1980s. 

The Kladmuur Foundation is transferring its archive of the early years of Groningen graffiti (1978-1992) to the Groninger Archives. To celebrate this, Kladmuur, the Groninger Archives, Museum aan de A and others are organizing various activities about Groningen's graffiti past. Initiator Hugo Engwerda of Stichting Kladmuur: . 'With our project we want to promote knowledge about the origins of Groningen street art.'
