About this activity.

Art project De Reis ('The Journey') in inner city churches Groningen

This summer work by the artists' collective 6kmperuur10mdiep is on display in 4 churches in Groningen's inner city. They will introduce the public to the journey they take as artists. A journey through the outer and inner world and through to their personal visual world. The viewer is taken through these worlds. The downtown churches are cooperating in this initiative by opening their doors to the artists and the public who enjoy visiting the city during the summer.

The route can be visited from Friday, July 19 to Saturday, August 17, at Akerk, Nieuwe Kerk, Remonstrant Church and Old Catholic Church.

The Old Catholic Church features work by Natascha J.A. Rodenburg and Sylvie Arrabito on delimitation and borders. Rodenburg shows a film of a physical and mental journey, with notes of the work process and whatsapp messages as subtitles. Arrabito explores on paper the various crosses that exist as symbols of connection, and in addition she creates an installation about the wind, which is boundless.

At the Akerk, Wilma Drooger works in the sacristy on an installation of frayed threads and the fluff of dandelions. They are connected and form a shelter in this ancient space. The journey she has taken in her artistry in recent years has been that of connection between letting go and grasping. Another space in this church features work on paper by Esther IJssels. “The simplicity, the purity and fragility of the material makes it exciting to work with. My journey shows how broad the concept of drawing is.” The simplicity of the materials they use give the work a pure and intimate quality.

In the Remonstrant Church on Coehoornsingel, three artists from the collective are exhibiting. They take the visitor into their concerns about the earth. Mare Sliedrecht is creating an altarpiece titled “Brave New Earth,” an earth without people. Marjo van den Bekerom shows a large amount of voracious snails gliding past the windows. The snails symbolize man's greed. She builds her work on the spot during the exhibition, as does Maya Vermeulen. On the floor of the church, she creates a mosaic that calls attention to the preservation of a healthy nature.

The Nieuwe Kerk features monumental drawings by Pauline Kick and paper sculptures by Josefien Alkema, both inspired by movement in nature. Pauline Kick makes her walks on the mud flats visible with collections of found material and structures of movement of ebb and flow. In this process, new memories and images emerge. Alkema seeks images for thoughts and experiences that transcend language. She makes abstract sculptures, “cosmic ornaments'.

The artists' collective 6kmperuur10mdiep is a group of artists who not only want to travel the surface, but also look for depth, with attention to the background and substrate of ideas. The artists live in the three Northern provinces.
