Contour - Jildau Nijboer, Kevin Nieuwenhuijs, Sergio Femar

galerie with tsjalling:
5 March 2022 to 9 April 2022

About this activity.

In the work of the three artists in the 'Contour' exhibition at galerie with tsjalling, everything revolves around form, color and the space in and around the artwork. All three artists - Sergio Femar, Kevin Nieuwenhuijs and Jildau Nijboer - make paintings, while at the same time playing with the third dimension in the works. Each exhibitor gives his own interpretation and has a clear signature, which results in a varied and playful exhibition. The exhibition can be seen in gallery with tsjalling: at Kostersgang 26-a in Groningen from March 5 to April 9, 2022.

The reuse of materials is central to the work of the Spanish artist Sergio Femar. He is on a constant quest for discarded materials to use in his paintings: planks, pieces of pallets, pieces of cloth. These recycled materials are always clearly visible in the sculptural works that are created in this way, but at the same time the aim of the artist is to give them a completely new function as a work of art. Ultimately, the abstract composition is the most important; Femar remains a real painter, but at the same time makes us aware of our consumer behaviour.

The carriers of Kevin Nieuwenhuijs's work are always prepared with great care, so that a surface is created that is as smooth as possible. This is important for the artist because he often places his final painting on the canvas in one quick movement, an action that should not go wrong. His goal is to create an imaginary sculpture in space. Many shapes are reminiscent of a monolith, a self-contained stone. In other canvases, this stone shape is saved, so that the work enters into a symbiotic relationship with its immediate environment. The hole is a reference to the mass and heaviness of the stone, which have both disappeared in these hole paintings, and that they give the feeling that they are actually present.

Jildau Nijboer tries to incorporate in her paintings images that she has caught in the everyday world. The subsequent painting of these is for her a search for how paint can give a shape to imagination. She regularly uses photos, which are not immediately recognizable as such in the paintings. There is often a tipping point between abstraction and figuration, a game about recognition and association, about loss of grip and grip. The round panels she uses ensure that you as a viewer are put on the wrong foot, the unusual shape makes the painting almost an object. At the same time they know how to forcefully suck you into the world of the artist, which ensures an enormous focus on the painted.
