Now in the Tschumi Pavilion: ‘Chromatic Reflections’ by Tamar Frank
About this activity.
This fall, the light installation Chromatic Reflections by Tamar Frank can be seen in the Tschumi pavilion. It is the first time that an art project by this internationally active artist can be seen in Groningen.
🍾 The opening will take place on Thursday, November 14 at 4:30 p.m., and will be performed by former City Architect Niek Verdonk. He was one of the driving forces behind the manifestation What a Wonderful World!, for which he brought architect Bernard Tschumi to Groningen in 1990.
🗓️ After that, Chromatic Reflections can be admired day and night on the Hereplein in Groningen until February 16, 2025.
About Chromatic Reflections
For this coastal project, Frank and her team have completely covered the glass pavilion with chromatic foil. This material has the special property of changing color, depending on the viewing angle. This creates a spectacle of moving colours for the viewer, from blue to green, from yellow to magenta, and everything in between. In addition, the contours of the glass construction are made extra visible with the help of light lines. When it is dark, endless reflections within the pavilion become visible. Together with the reflective movements of the busy Hereplein, this creates a unique, dynamic cadence.
Architecture Tschumi pavilion central
Before Tamar Frank (Amsterdam, 1974) got to work, she studied the architecture of the Tschumi pavilion in depth: “The tilted glass box is a striking structure. It was originally made for the manifestation What a Wonderful World!, for which several pavilions were placed throughout the city. The common denominator was that these pavilions became public spaces to show video clips. The Tschumi pavilion became an open air cinema that is completely transparent instead of the usual black box.”
The starting point of the current installation was to keep the pavilion transparent but to make the spaces within the space visible. This was achieved thanks to the chromatic foil, which plays a starring role here.
About Tamar Frank
Tamar Frank graduated in 1997 from the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht in the direction of Monumental Design. Working with light already started during her studies; during the final exam exhibition she presented her first light installations.
After graduating, she set up her own company: Lightspace. With this she realizes projects at home and abroad. From an ode to writer Marga Minco in Breda to a cultural campaign from the National Opera in Paris. She realized her largest assignment in 2011, the work Celestial Elevation, for two residential towers in Vancouver.
She has participated in many (light) festivals, including Amsterdam Light Festival, Glow Eindhoven, Lyslyd Copenhagen and Into the Great Wide Open on Vlieland.
Last year she worked for the first time with a choreographer, Matthew Pawlicki-Sinclair, who lives and works in Groningen. With him she created the performance Transcendence, which was shown during the opening of Monument Day at the Noorderbegraafplaats in Hilversum.
The Tschumi Pavilion
The Tschumi Pavilion, also known as the Glass Video Gallery at the Hereplein in Groningen, was designed by the French-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. Built in 1990, the pavilion is an iconic part of Groningen, where various temporary multimedia projects have been shown since 1995. Thanks to the transparent design, the works of art are visible to everyone who walks by or waits for the bus. Since December 2021, the Tschumi Pavilion has been programmed by Kunstpunt Groningen.
