chôra | Helia Rafie
About this activity.
In January and February, Helia Rafie will be a guest artist at the Bierumer School, creating new work. The work in development can be viewed during regular opening hours.
Raised in Tehran, Iran, her artistic practice is deeply influenced by the city's distinctive mix of chaos, paradoxes and modernity. This juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary elements within the sprawling urban structures has all found its place in her artistic expressions. Due to the censorship and manipulation of information in Iran, her generation grew up as digital natives, liberated by the Internet. It was essential to use VPNs and torrents, the only ways to bypass the government's filter. Iranian information restrictions and her desire to learn more have familiarized her with new ways to use available technologies.
"My work revolves around the intersection of reality, technology and human perception. I am deeply intrigued by the symbiotic relationship between human stories and the digital realm - a realm where technology and stories come together to challenge our perspectives.
The chaotic forms in my installations symbolize the overwhelming influx of information and stimuli in the digital age. We are bombarded daily with data, images and messages. These compositions, rich in intricate details and layers, reflect this overload of information. They aim to encourage viewers to navigate through the complexity, much like the way we navigate the digital landscape- flipping through vast amounts of data to discover meaning and coherence."
The opening of the Chôra exhibition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 24. Because she also has work at Y2 in Groningen, a school bus will run between Y2 and Bierumer School.
The work at both locations is linked in content and an element will be added during the bus ride. Departure from Y2 at 14:00 back from Bierum at 17:00. Includes artist-talk, soup and drinks at the Bierumer School and afterparty at Y2. Register at SIGN UP | Helia (heliarafie.nl), cost € 7,-.
