China in Passing
About this activity.
The photo series 'China in passing' is the result of five photography trips through China in the period 1985-1991. Actually, this was preceded by a journey: a six-month world trip that started in Australia and ended in 1983 with my first 'Trans Mongolian' trip from Beijing via Mongolia and Russia to Arnhem.
Pieter Griffioen: “I made my first photo trips on my own, but I was not given permission to take photos in factories, hospitals, etc. I made the later trips in collaboration with the Netherlands China Friendship Association. They realized a program proposed by me, which I was able to implement after permission from the Chinese Friendship Association.
There had to be a plan B because previously granted permissions were often withdrawn on the spot without explanation.
In the above-mentioned period important events took place such as the bloody protests on Tiananmen Square and the fall of the Wall, which meant that on my later train journeys in Berlin, dogs, mirrors and the demolition of the train interior became a thing of the past. The 'Trans Mongolian' train journeys provided a good insight into the major differences in development of the countries through which the journey took place.
China has rapidly caught up in recent decades. As a result, the historical value of these photos has increased at a similar pace.”
